My left hand in a bright pink cast, I know, right.. :-) |
In the last winter break, I got a hand surgery because I broke my wrist when I was playing fusball (not the American Football, but a soccer table game). I know that it was pretty silly to have hurt by a game, but it was real. On November 24th 2012, Indonesian community held a thanksgiving potluck. There were only few Indonesian who lived in Lubbock. However, we wanted to have an assembly so that we could know each other as friends. In addition, they served Indonesian cuisines and I really enjoyed the foods. In the place where we gathered, there was a fusball table and I tried to play it for the first time.
As the game became so interesting, I twisted my left wrist too hard and I felt mild pain on my wrist. However, it did not last long.
As the game became so interesting, I twisted my left wrist too hard and I felt mild pain on my wrist. However, it did not last long.
A few days later, I felt that there was something wrong with my hand. I was not so anxious, but I just wanted to make sure that everything is okay. Thus, I went to the University Student Wealthness Center to see the doctor. At first, the doctor said that it was just a common pain. However, the doctor did the X-ray scan to justify his answer. He was wrong. The doctor said that there was a broken bone in my wrist known as scaphoid fracture. "The bone is splitted into two parts and you need a serious treatment," he added. He directed me to go to the hospital and to see a specialist doctor. Several days later, I went to the hospital and saw the doctor. She did the X-ray and found out that the fracture was getting bigger. She said that the bone splitted into two parts and a surgery was needed. The fracture will not be healed most of the time without a surgery. I was shocked, but I had to make a decision. I called my sponsor and my parents. They agreed that I should go for it as long as it is good for my health. In addition, I have a health insurance that cover most of the fees although the cost of the surgery would be very expensive. The doctor wrapped my left hand with a cast so that I will not be able to move my wrist. The cast would be stay for about a month untill the day of Surgery on January 3rd.
With only one hand, I faced difficulties just to do daily activities that I used to do very easily such as: dress up, tie a shoe, eat, studying, typing, and cleaning my bed. I felt like I am a useless person with only one hand. I realized that health is very important and it's the best gift from Allah. I looked down and I saw that there are a lot unfortunate people who don't have hands and legs but they are never giving up. Instead, they keep struggling to achieve their dreams although they do not have a complete body permanently. Thus,I realized that my condition was far better than them and I should be grateful because of that. On the day of surgery, I was put into sleep and all I remembered was waking up in the recovery room. The doctor said that she put a pin inside the fractured bones to make them in line and dig some bone materials from other bone in my arm to fill in the gap between the broken bones. It sounds scary, but I was okay. After two months in a cast and some regular general check ups, I gained back my health very well. I need weekly regular theraphy sessions to restore the wrist movement, though. I want to say thank you to my family, my brother and sister, my friends, and anyone else who prayed for me. Thank you very much..
