I was so excited to be able to come home to Indonesia this summer of 2014. I have been missing my family since a long time, haha. I miss the foods and simply the idea of being outside of the school. The spring semester of 2014 was wonderful, filled with so many activities and studying. The struggle was real, but my academic career this semester went beyond my expectation.
I missed Indonesian food so much while I was in the US. Therefore, I want to share what kind of food I ate in my first day in Indonesia. Notice that this post is based on my opinion and my preferences of food. The information below do not necessarily represent all Indonesian :-)
KFC
Yeah, you read it correctly. It is the crispy delicious fried chicken prepared by Kentucky Fried Chicken. This franchises are pretty much everywhere in the world. However, I think KFC is one of the most popular fast food restaurants that provide fried chicken in Indonesia (in fact my mom even gave a name to any fried chicken as "Kentucky"). The menu is pretty much the same as any KFC in the world. However, what makes it different is they always have a small cup of rice as the side dish instead of fries. Indonesians love eating white rice. We eat rice everyday (or maybe twice or three times a day). This dish is a great idea when you are starving at the middle of the night.
As I arrived in Jakarta like at 1 am in the morning, my friends and I were starving. We decided to order a KFC delivery right to the hotel we were staying. In less than 30 minutes, we ate this tasty fried chicken. Only bones left, I am sorry.
FRIED DUCK WITH HOT SAMBAL
The taste of duck's meet is almost like chicken, but it is more soft and tender than chicken. You eat it with white rice, some slices of cucumber, and a cup of hot sambal. We called this kind of food "lalapan." I almost forget to define the world sambal. According to wikipedia, sambal is "sauce typically made from a variety of chili peppers and secondary ingredients such as shrimp paste, fish sauce, garlic, ginger, shallot, scallion, sugar, lime juice, and rice vinegar or other vinegars." Sambal is served as hot and spicy condiment for dishes like fried chicken and fried duck. The duck's meat was marinated with Indonesian traditional spices and then fried in hot oil so that all the flavors were locked inside the meat. We use our hand without fork or spoon to eat this kind of dish. I usually take a small piece of meat, dip it into the sambal and put it on top the rice. Eat them together. It's yummy. In case you want to give it a try, please make sure that you like hot and spicy food. This dish can be very hot and spicy depend on the type of its sambal. A similar food that I ate today was Fried Chicken with Sambal Ijo. The chicken was seasoned the same way, but the sambal was poured on top of the chicken.
CHICKEN SATE
This is my favorite. In Indonesia, we call it "sate ayam." It is pretty similar to BBQ, but it has a special peanut sauce on top of it. We dice the chicken and skewer them. The chicken then is put on burning charcoal until the meat is fully cooked. After we prepared the sauce, we dip the 'sate' into the sauce before we serve it. I don't know the science behind it, but I know that it is so delicious. If you don't have allergy to peanut and you haven't tried this dish, you definitely need to try it. There are beef sate and lamb sate as well. However, since I am not a big fan of beef and lamb, I don't really want to discuss it :-P
Today's drink:
